Wordle for Kids
Free online game
Alexandra F.: Like Wordle, this game starts out with a blank 5x6 grid, giving players six tries to guess a five-letter word. In this version, however, the words don't go above an 8th grade level, and players have the option to use words between 3 and 11 letters. Though the page is a little cluttered with ads and other game recommendations, the gameplay itself is pretty easy and straightforward.
Wizarding Wordle
Free online game
Alexandra F.: Calling all Harry Potter fans! MuggleNet has a Wordle game just for you. The five-letter words and names in this puzzle are all related to the magical wizarding world, and come from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts stories.
Spellie
Free online game
Alexandra F.: Spellie is a web-based word puzzle that closely matches the Wordle format, but which includes kid-friendly features like being able to customize the difficulty level, switch the keyboard setup, or use a spell checker. I love the very simple and intuitive layout that makes it easy to just start playing, and especially appreciate that it is totally ad-free!
Wordscapes
Free app available on
Alexandra F.: This word puzzle app is a lot like Word Cookies! except that the words you need to guess are also aligned as a crossword. So, it ends up being a little easier (and more fun) because the crossword layout gives you clues as you fill in the spaces. My 5 and 16 year old love this game equally, and it's usually what I play on my phone, too, when I have a few minutes of downtime. It's free to download and play, but has ads and in-app purchases.
Kidle
Free online game
Alexandra F.: The clean, simple interface makes this a great, kid-friendly version of Wordle, especially since it includes customizable settings for word length and number of guesses. Kids can play on the app, or on a web browser. Bonus - no ads!
Foodle
Free online game
Alexandra F.: Just like Wordle, only limited to food-related words, making it easier to play. Though the game is free, the website does run ads.
Word Cookies!
Free app available on
Alexandra F.: Everyone in my family, from the preschooler on up, loves playing this fun little word game for kids and adults. You are given a few letters, and the goal is to swipe the letters together to guess the words. The app is free (with in-app purchases), but the sheer number of ads that pop up can get a little annoying.
