Snow Tubing & Sledding Near New York City, Mapped

Jennie Utsinger:  Camelback, self-described as the largest snow tubing park in the US, has over 40 lanes of heart-stopping tubing fun! Located about an hour and 45 minutes outside of midtown Manhattan, the park stays open quite late, so riders can opt for a daytime or night session. After dark, Camelback offers "Galactic Snowtubing" with an LED light show.

Jennie Utsinger:  Shawnee Mountain is located about an hour and a half from midtown Manhattan. There are several tubing lanes and a limited number of adult & child tandem tubes available. Magic carpets tow you and your tube back up to the top of the slope.

Jennie Utsinger:  One of the closest snow tubing locations is Campgaw Mounting Tubing, located just an hour from midtown Manhattan. Riders whiz down the mountain on single-person tubes and then ride their snow tube back up the mountain on a lift.

Jennie Utsinger:  Clove Lakes Park is a favorite for Staten Island residents. Enter at Martling Avenue and Slossing Avenue and take your pick from the surrounding hills. It's the official snow day location for NYC Parks, so you may see rangers handing out hot chocolate or building snowmen on snow days. If you tire of sledding, you can take a spin on the outdoor ice skating rink or admire the park's three hundred year-old tulip tree.

Jennie Utsinger:  Bay Ridge residents often head to Owl's Head Park for sledding. There's one long, steep hill for adventurous sledders and several smaller hills throughout the park. Another perk is the beautiful view over the bay.

Jennie Utsinger:  Prospect Park has lots of great sledding slopes for both toddlers and older kids. One of the most popular spots is near the entrance at Prospect Park West and 9th Street. Families also gather behind the picnic house near the Prospect Park West and 6th Street entrance, all along the Long Meadow up to the north end of the park, and throughout the park at other small hills. Prospect Park is the Parks Department's official Brooklyn snow day site, so children can head to the Picnic House on snow days for hot chocolate.

Jennie Utsinger:  Fort Greene Park is home to four excellent sledding hills, which should satisfy all your kids, from toddler to teens. Stick near Myrtle Avenue for the gentlest slopes or venture to the steeper inclines further south.

Jennie Utsinger:  Central Park isn't the only upper Manhattan sledding spot. Riverside Drive has several great hills for sledding, including a pretty steep hill near 91st Street. The Parks Department sets out hay bales to help stop speeding sleds from crashing into fences or trees, so it's best to use caution on this slope. There's another popular hill at 103rd that's more appropriate for younger kids. Keep strolling north along the Hudson and follow the kids for more sledding choices.

Jennie Utsinger:  Pilgrim Hill is the unanimous favorite sledding spot in Central Park. Enter the park on the east side at 72nd Street and look for the statue of a pilgrim. Pilgrim Hill has a steep incline, which levels out at the end, perfect for sledding. Younger kids may want to try the gentler (and less crowded) slope at Cedar Hill, just south of the Metropolitan Museum on the east side.

Jennie Utsinger:  Thrill-seekers: follow the crowd from Columbia to Morningside Park on snow days. There are some great steep hills in the park. Enter at 110th Street, 113th Street, or 122nd Street on the Morningside Avenue side.

Jennie Utsinger:  Queens residents often head to Astoria Park for sledding, where they can also enjoy a nice view of Manhattan. Enter at Ditmars Boulevard, between 19th Street and Shore Boulevard.

Jennie Utsinger:  Venture to Inwood Hill Park in the north Bronx for a less crowded sledding experience. This spacious park has a nice variety of hills and beautiful scenery, with birds and wildlife visible year-round.

Jennie Utsinger:  Crotona Park in the Bronx has a great sledding hill and is a popular spot. Head towards ball field #3 at Fulton Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway and follow the sledders. Crotona Park is the NYC Parks official snow day destination, so you'll also find hot chocolate and snowball fights on snow days.

Jennie Utsinger:  A great sledding hill for younger kids is located at Mary Whalen Playground, near 79th Street and Park Lane South in Forest Park. Note that while Forest Park's golf course has a steep hill, sledding is prohibited there by the Parks Department for safety reasons.

Jennie Utsinger:  If you're close to Bayside, Queens, bring your sled over to Crocheron Park along 35th Avenue between Cross Island Parkway and 215th Street. The park has a good mix of slopes for both toddlers and thrill-seekers.
