15 Indianapolis Swim Lesson Picks From Parents

Kristy Pepping:  At Goldfish, the pool is heated to 90 degrees so no feeling chilly during those winter months. They offer swim lessons once or twice per week and drop-in classes if you just want to try it out. Plus, this swim center was started by parents so they understand what it takes to teach kids how to swim.

Age: 4 months - 12 years
Cost: $25 annual membership fee, monthly packages start at $84.

Beth Wood:  The YMCA offers offers swim lessons for beginners to advanced stroke technique at 7 of their Indy area locations. There are private, group and toddler/parent classes available.

Age: infant+ (children under 4 must be accompanied by a caregiver while in the pool)
Cost: multiple packages, non-member weekly group lessons for 7 weeks: $96

Beth Wood:  Stony Creek Swim Center has been teaching lessons for over 25 years with a curriculum that develops proper stroke technique and fundamental swimming skills. They use the ‘rollover’ method of breathing in lessons and teach water safety as well as stroke basics and development. They even offer a free Water Babies classes for kids 4 weeks - 6 months!

Kristy Pepping:  Indy Island is part of Raymond Park. It's a full-service indoor aquatic water center. Part of this facility includes a lap pool where they offer a variety of swim lessons.

Cost: many options available, group lesson that meets weekly for 9 weeks: $65

Beth Wood:  Swim lessons are available year round at Aqua-Tots. Their indoor heated pool stays at 90 degrees making the water comfortable for all ages and all skill levels. Aqua-Tots offers private, semi-private and group swim lessons. You'll also find special mommy-and-me classes, swim club, swim team and more at Aqua-Tots.

Kristy Pepping:  Carmel Aquatic Center is a swim club offering a competitive swim program. But they also offer recreational swim lessons from beginner to advanced. They state their goal is to make swim lessons more accessible to the community. Plus, the ratio is four students per one instructor so lots of time spent on individual development.

Age: 3+ and potty trained
Cost: many options available, group lesson that meets 2x week for 4 weeks: $104

Beth Wood:  The Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation offer swim lessons to ages 6 months - adults at both the indoor and outdoor pools located at the Monon Community Center. Lessons teach swimmers essential skills from water safety to stroke development.

Age: 6 months + (children under 3 must be accompanied by a caregiver in the pool)

Cost: multiple options, weekly group lessons for 4 weeks: $65

Erin P.:  Infant Swimming Resource has been in existence for over 50 years, operating under their misson, “Not One More Child Drowns.” They strive to keep infants and young children safe in and around water. They offer short, but intense, one-on-one lessons to teach water safety skills, self-rescue skills, including rollback-to-float and swim-float-swim. They also include parent education on water safety and drowning prevention.

Kristy Pepping:  The IU Natatorium is located on the campus of IUPUI. It has been a fixture in the community since 1982 and has hosted hundreds several state, regional, national and International events. They also provide aquatic programming and swim lessons for kids.

Dawn Denning:  You can get the swim lessons that best fit your family's needs at the Healthplex. Whether your child is a beginner and needs to learn water safety or wants to focus on advancing their skills, you can find the right skill level and age group to meet your kiddo's needs. If your kiddo is too young for water independence, they offer parent and tot swim lessons from 6-35 months that focus on comfort in the water. If your child wants one-on-one attention, private swim lessons are also available.

Cost: Group class $50; Private lessons $26/session. Member discounts available.

Kristy Pepping:  Indy Swim Studio offers swim programs in a warm water Endless Pool. The Endless Pool is a smaller pool with a current that mimics swimming in a larger 25 meter pool. Lessons are offered in both groups and private. Students can learn to swim or perfect stroke technique.

Age: 3+
Cost: weekly group lessons for 8 weeks starts at: $72

Kristy Pepping:  Zionsville Aquatics Center offers three individual pools, an eight lane, 25 yard competition pool kept at 80 degrees and shallow instructional pool with a ramp kept at 84 degrees. There are locker rooms for changing, restrooms in the lobby for spectators and a viewing balcony for parents.

Kristy Pepping:  Krannert Family Center is part of the Indy Parks and Recreation system. The park has a year round indoor swimming facility. This center offers swim lessons for kids. Plus, there is a waterslide and play features for some fun when lessons are over during open swim hours.

Cost: multiple options available, weekly parent and me classes for 8 weeks: $45

Kristy Pepping:  Splash Island is an indoor/outdoor waterpark facility and pool. The indoor section has a three-lane lap pool which offers swim lessons year-round. These include parent-tot, preschool, youth and teen. These are both group and one-on-one instruction.
