Favorite Parenting Humor Books

We asked parents to share their all-time favorite funny parenting books. Because nothing puts the challenges of parenting into perspective quite like a good laugh!

Everyone knows parenting can be hard. But it can also be funny and wonderful! These books are great because they say what many parenting books don't -- raising kids takes a lot of patience and a good sense of humor. Keep these in mind when choosing gifts for new parents.

    I Heart My Little A-Holes

Cherisse Harris:  Welcome to the land of brutal (but hilarious) honesty! In the first of her funny parenting books, Karen Alpert invites parents to take themselves a little less seriously. Her laugh-out-loud stories and illustrations remind parents that kids can drive you crazy in the best way possible.

I Want My Epidural Back: Adventures in Mediocre Parenting

Kelly R:  Reading Karen Alpert's second book made me a terrible parent. But just for one day, because that's how long it took for me to devour it from cover to cover while essentially ignoring my family. I think it was worth it, because it's ultimately made me a better parent every day since. Karen (aka Baby Sideburns) shares hilarious anecdotes and a refreshing perspective that encourage us to stop aiming for perfection and instead savor those messy, beautiful, annoying, disgusting, delicious moments that fill parenthood.

Man vs. Child: One Dad's Guide to the Weirdness of Parenting

Cherisse Harris:  If you've been a little hard on yourself about being the perfect parent, pick up this book to get some quick perspective. Most parents are going through the same worries and scenarios with their kids, and the authors of Sh*tty Mom (who happen to be four moms) tackle everyday parenting issues in the funniest ways while letting us know we're all in the same boat.

    Parenting: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures

Cherisse Harris:  Known for her hilarious illustrations and stories, Amber Dusick gives parents a pass to de-stress and laugh through some of their most frustrating parental moments. A sense of humor about poop stories and appreciation for mild profanity required.

Welcome to the Club: 100 Parenting Milestones You Never Saw Coming

Cherisse Harris:  Raquel D'Apice offers an eye-opening greeting to first-time parents -- dispelling all the myths they may have heard before they became parents, and preparing them for the surprises, laughs, and cries that come with having children. The perfect gift for expecting moms and dads.

    Safe Baby Handling Tips

Kelly R:  My husband and I received this book as a gift when we were expecting our first child, and I still remember reading it together for the first time and laughing hysterically at each page. David and Kelly Sopp employ a simple board book style to illustrate good and bad parenting practices - did you know there is a wrong way to check baby's diaper? Even my kids got a kick out of this one, and it was a frequently requested (maybe somewhat disturbing?) bedtime story.

    Go the F**k to Sleep

Cherisse Harris:  Adam Mansbach's hilarious picture book is an irreverent bedtime story for exhausted parents everywhere. The book says what we're all thinking as it details the often exhausting and frustrating process of getting the kids to go to bed.

Check out what parents say their favorite regular bedtime story books are, too!

    Dad is Fat

Cherisse Harris:  Stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan lets you in on a secret most first-time parents learn fairly quickly: having a child changes your life in some unexpected ways. This book is a hilarious collection of essays about his experiences as a father of five living in New York City.

Hold On, But Don't Hold Still

Kristy Pepping:  Author Kristina Kuzmic has become a voice of reason to parents everywhere. She has been spreading her message of acceptance and understanding via social media and online videos for a while. Now she is channeling that same witty advice into a book called, Hold On, But Don't Hold Still: Hope and Humor from My Seriously Flawed Life. This book talks about her struggles and triumphs as a parent. This is a great read whether you are a first-time parent or a seasoned one.

    The Baby Owner's Manual

Cherisse Harris:  In this funny manual, Dr. Louis Borgenicht and Joe Borgenicht give a step-by-step guide (with illustrations!) to all of your pressing questions regarding baby care such as holding a baby for the first time, changing diapers, feeding, and getting your baby on schedule.

Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay

Cherisse Harris:  Stefanie Wilder-Taylor offers common sense advice for new moms based on her personal experiences and other funny moms like her. It's a great read, and worth checking out her other funny parenting books too!

Cherisse Harris:  Brian Gordon's honest and hilarious comic book for parents speaks honestly about issues like building up your confidence as a parent, coping with very active kids, and prioritizing chores and parenting responsibilities.

    Daddy Needs A Drink

Cherisse Harris:  Despite his ranting on real-life experiences of sleep deprivation and his child running around without underwear, Robert Wilder actually loves being a dad. Wilder explains his endearing juxtapositions with hysterical accuracy, and you can't help but laugh as you recall your parental fun times. He's the kind of parent that wishes for alone time, but secretly enjoys helping his kids with school fundraisers, and thinking up wonderful baby names.
