Snap Circuits Jr
Age 8+
Kelly R: There are many different Snap Circuits kits to choose from, but they all give kids a fun and hands-on introduction to how electronics work. This is a great introductory set, and my kids have really enjoyed snapping together the real circuit components to create working electronic circuits and devices. Each kit can be used to create a variety of different projects, including doorbells, radios, alarms, and much more.
Perplexus
Age 9+
Alexandra F.: Maze ball puzzles like the Perplexus are quite popular with both adults and kids, especially beginning around the age of 7. My 7-year-old has a large collection of maze balls for himself, and loves to give them as gifts for his friends.
Melissa & Doug Magic in a Snap! Abracadabra Collection
Age 4-7
Tim Ponisciak: A lot of kids start getting interested in magic tricks right around this age. So get your little one this great starter kit from Melissa & Doug! There is color changing silk, a rope cutter and a magic wand! Your kids will love doing these tricks and putting on a show. Graduate to learning a few more easy magic tricks for kids, too.
Simon Electronic Memory Game
Age 7+
Kelly R: Simon is just as fun and addictive as it was in the 80s, and has been improved with an LCD counter to keep track of the score.
Long Distance Walkie Talkies
Dawn R: Walkie talkies are super fun gift ideas for 7-year-olds! Your children will enjoy playing with them for hours! They can play hide and seek or share top secret plans with friends. These walk talkies are very easy to use and have great sound quality.
Our Generation 18 Inch Doll
Age 3+
Kristy Pepping: My seven-year-old and her friends are really into playing American Girl dolls these days. However, there are so many 18-inch dolls on the market, a doll purchase does not have to break the bank.
Singing Machine Karaoke System
Kelly R: A karaoke machine will be good for hours of fun for kids (ok, and parents). Works best in a house with a soundproof basement. This model boasts a CD player, light effects, bluetooth streaming, connection for your own device, and the capability to use 2 microphones.
Klutz Book of Paper Airplanes
Age 7+
Kelly R: This book includes instructions and supplies for creating 10 different types of paper airplanes. A great activity book for parents and kids to enjoy together.
Doinkit Darts Magnetic Dart Board
Age 6-15
Carly Follett: No need to worry about holes in your walls or children getting hurt because these darts are made using magnets! It has all the features of a real dart set except the darts are made of strong magnets. The dartboard comes with a hook to easily hang the board in any room. This can be a great game for your child to play alone, compete against a friend or sibling or it can be fun for the whole family.
Exploding Kittens Game
Age 7+ (2-5 players)
Kelly R: A fun and sarcastic card game that is perfect for the 7-year-old sense of humor. My kids love this one.
Rocket Copters
Age 8+
Erynn: These slingshot-powered rockets can shoot straight up into the sky for hours of daytime or nighttime fun. They even make a noise when they zoom through the air, and kids will love to compete and see who can shoot their rocket the highest. This is one as-seen-on-TV product that was a huge hit with our resident 7-year-old (and dad, too!).
Razor 360 Flash Rider
Ages 5-7
Tracy Snyder Molina: This might look similar to your Big Wheel from the 1970s, but Razor has brought this three-wheeler into the 21st century by allowing it to make 360 degree spins and a spark bar! We got this for my younger son when he was 7 and it's still a huge hit with all of the neighborhood kids.
State Quarter Map
Ages 8+
Kelly R: This map allows kids to collect and display state quarters by adding them to corresponding cutouts on the map. My son received this as a gift for his 7th birthday, and I thought it was such a unique idea. It's educational, it's fun, and it has lasting value.
Melissa & Doug Scratch Art Set
Age 4+
Kelly R: Use the wooden stylus to scratch off the matte coating and reveal hidden colors and patterns. This set includes supplies for 16 projects.
K'NEX Deluxe Building Set
Age 7+
Erynn: It's no coincidence that this K'NEX kit is intended for kids 7+ since that's the perfect age for budding engineers to flex their skills! With wheels and a ton of connecting pieces, your child might just surprise you with the creations they come up with. Some pieces are difficult to connect/disconnect so having a parent nearby is often helpful. Note that K'NEX do have tiny connectors that aren't suitable for play around younger siblings.
