Make Play Dough

In a large pot, combine 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup salt, and 2 tablespoons cream of tartar. Mix together and add 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon oil, and food coloring until you reach your desired color. Cook over medium heat and stir for about 5 minutes until the mixture forms into a ball. Remove from the pot and knead on a floured surface until the play dough is nice and smooth. Store in a container with a lid.

This recipe for play dough is perfect! Our dough has come out just right every time we’ve made it, and it is so easy that it’s a fun, quick, messy (but not *too* messy!) activity right up my 3-year-old’s alley. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the food coloring doesn’t stain our hands when playing with the dough, too - not even red! I only wish I’d tried this sooner - now that I know how cheap and easy (and fun!) it is to make your own play dough, I am a little annoyed at how much I’ve spent buying it over the years.
