We recently started watching this Netflix show. It's a story of an orphan, Beth, who attends a boarding school set in the 1950s. While she is at the boarding school, she learns how to play chess from the janitor. Beth is naturally great at the game. The show follows her life as she grows up and works her way up the chess circuit all way dealing with addiction.

The first episode had me hooked right away! I was not expecting such boldness out of a show featuring the game of chess. Such a cool storyline full of passion, sorrows, and organic friendships for the win. The writing is so smart and witty, too.

This show was fantastic from beginning to end. It would have been a bonus to have a little knowledge about chess so I could better understand some of the game play, but it was still completely enjoyable without that. We loved it!
